About the event

We are delighted to announce our live podcast event at The Wave in Bristol on the 2nd of July!

The Ocean Woman Podcast aims to explore surf culture through the eyes of the women who are shaping it. Join us as at The Wave on the 2nd of July for the chance to experience live conversations with three influential ocean women as we discuss topics including building community, epic surf trips, diversity and inclusion in surfing, motherhood, surf photography, activism, mental health, facing fears, pushing boundaries and so much more.

These conversations will take place alongside The Wave's women-only Sister Sessions, which will run from 1pm-6pm. Anyone is welcome to attend the discussions, whether you plan on surfing or not! Conversations will take place in front of a small audience of 40 and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Tickets must be purchased separately for each conversation. Book before the 25th of June and you will be automatically entered into a draw to win a free session at The Wave!

Event Schedule:

2pm - 3pm Sally McGee: Cultivating a thriving women's surf scene in the North East.

Sally McGee is a surfer, activist, Finisterre ambassador, mother and founder of the women's surf school, Surf Yonder. She started Surf Yonder in Tynemouth back in 2018 and has been nurturing a thriving community of north eastern female surfers ever since. Join us as we discuss all things Yonder, surfing and traveling through motherhood, environmental activism, and what it takes to be a surfer in the north east.

3:30pm - 4:30pm Yvette Curtis: Pioneering a more diverse and inclusive surf culture.

Yvette is the founder of Wave Wahines, an organization dedicated to providing women and girls of all ethnic backgrounds with equal access to surfing. Yvette's voice is one that the surfing community has been in desparate need of for a long time. Join us as we discuss her recent Diversity and Inclusion in Surfing Report, the power of representation, the history of surfing in the UK and the importance of keeping girls in sport.

5:30pm - 6:30pm Tirion Jenkins: Lessons from a PhD in the effects of cold water surfing on mental health.

Tirion is a PhD student at Cardiff University studying the effects of cold water surfing on mental health. She is also a talented surf photographer and one of the cofounders of the Gower Women's Surf Society. Join us as we discuss her research and explore the ways in which surfing in cold water fosters mindfulness, grit and resilience.
